FireDrone

Our Technology
Thermal insulation
The high-performance polyimide aerogel insulation enables the FireDrone to operate in extreme temperature environments where other robots can't go!
Design philosophy
Close collaboration of engineers with material scientists enables us to design and optimize the overall system of the FireDrone for use in extreme environments.
Situational awareness
Equipped with infrared and visual light camera systems, temperature and various optional sensors, the FireDrone relays vital information back to the operator to assess critical situations from a safe distance.

About us

The FireDrone is an ongoing project at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, as a collaboration between the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics and the Superinsulation Materials Group.

Our most recent research article on the FireDrone was published in the journal of Advanced Intelligent Systems, high-lighting the novel design approach to enable robot operations in extreme temperature environments.

Vision
Our aim is to develop a robotic system to assist firefighters in their daily life, to not only make their tasks more safe, but to also help save lives all around the world.
